Client:City of Sydney
Services provided:Custom build chandelier and on-site installation
Event:Sydney Lunar Festival
Location:Pitt Street Mall, Sydney
The brief:The City of Sydney hosted the Sydney Lunar Festival over 10 days in February 2019; this event celebrated Lunar New Year 2019, the beginning of Year of the Pig on the traditional Chinese calendar. Sydney’s official festival program is one of the largest Lunar New Year celebrations outside Asia, and to celebrate the Year of the Pig, the City of Sydney commissioned SRC to custom-build a stunning “flying pig” chandelier that was installed in Pitt Street Mall.
How it was brought to life:The City of Sydney commissioned McDermott Baxter in collaboration with Matt Hou Him Lai and Jincheng Jiang to design the custom piece. SRC then engineered and built the steel spine structure which measured an impressive 2.4m wide x 2.2m high and used one of our CNC machines to cut 162 gold aluminium pigs. Each steel ring was fitted with an LED lighting solution to ensure the chandelier was even more impressive by night than it was during the day.
Installation was no mean feat with the final piece weighing a hefty 325kg! The chandelier was carefully packed and transported to Pitt Street Mall, rigging points had been built into the structure and the piece was installed overnight between 9pm and 4am, using two boom lifts and a Hiab truck.

What our client thought:“This was the first year Staging Rentals have been involved in a lantern build. Their team was highly skilled and professional at all times. The lantern installation was one of the more difficult installs and used a never before tested rigging system. Staging Rentals worked very well with their sub-contractors and closely managed all of their work. I would highly recommend using Staging Rentals in the future due to the assigned teams, due diligence and professionalism across the board.” – Chris Balgot
